Planning A Destination Wedding

How to Plan a Destination Wedding

Thousands of couples each year are skipping the "hometown wedding" and going with something more exotic - a tropical beach, ancient castle or cliff overlooking the ocean- the world is open to you! While it can be a complicated process, it pays off in the end. Below you'll find some planning points to get you started about all the details that come along with a destination wedding.

Location
Obviously the most important detail about a destination wedding; the location. Make sure you consider the ease of travel to your location, as well as activities and accommodations for your guests. Check out the local tourism website or chamber of commerce for detailed information.

Check Availability
Before you get your heart set on a date, check availability at your top two choices. Make sure to consider high/low travel season - this will not only affect the price of the wedding, but also the cost for everyone else to attend! After comparing available dates and amenities at several locations, you're more prepared to make an informed decision.

Legal Stuff
Destination weddings within the United States are relatively easy - just check with the local authorities (usually the County office) for the required documents. If you're planning a destination wedding outside of the United States, get started early by contacting the Consulate in the country you wish to hold your wedding. Every country has its own set of marriage laws pertaining to religion, language, family, documentation, and more. Usually the Consulates are helpful and ready to explain their requirements to get started.

Travel Requirements and Plans
Make sure you know exactly what you and your guests will need in order to travel to your wedding destination. Even if you can't imagine living without your passport, your guests may need to get a renewal or even order their very first passport! It will help your guests tremendously if you communicate well abut the requirements to travel to your wedding. Don't forget about vaccination requirements!

Help Your Guests
Guests attending a destination wedding want to know how much it will cost. Take some time to do the research and be ready to give them an estimate on airfare, lodging, meals, vaccinations, etc.

Hire Someone
Most destination weddings can be included into a "package" that includes an on-site coordinator. If you are at a resort that does not have on-site coordination, ask for recommendations of local professional help for your wedding. Hiring a local will help you in the long-run with choosing reliable vendors and venues.
